Back to the basics Empty#1PostSubject: Back to the basics   Back to the basics EmptyTue Apr 18, 2017 7:56 pm

Lineak cursed his stupidity once more as the ship was hit by yet another wave.  The next wave to hit the deck coming not from the ocean but from the werewolf's stomache.  He had been curious about traveling on board an actual ship something he didn't feel the need to do ever again.  It had been a way to cross a vast sea and he had been promised untamed virgin wilderness.  That was all he had needed to hear before climbing aboard.  It had been smooth sailing for all of an hour before rough seas had siezed the ship in their grasp throwing it, and him, about like small toys in a bathtub.  As a child he had thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the tub creating massive waves as they devastated the toys floating on the water.  Now he had a greater appreciation for being one of those toys.  One of the sailors on the vessel walked past him laughing before pausing.  "You've got a little something..." It was hard to resist the urge to break the cretin's neck.  It took a special breed to travel the seas and Lineak was not afraid to admit his breed wasn't one of them.

A loud wailing sound came over the ship's speakers causing Lineak to panic for a moment.  What would a monstrosity of a ship have to worry about? The same sailor from before came back and placed a hand on his shoulder.  "Calm down it's the captain alerting everyone that land has been spotted.  We'll be landing in a few short hours, if the sea lets us."  That news made sparing the man worth it Lineak supposed.  Hours he could wait.  Hell he'd been waiting weeks already.  With the prospect of actually putting his feet on dry land once more Lineak decided to head to his cabin and get ready to disembark.

The weather and the sea did cooperate and the ship pulled into port an hour and a half later.  Lineak was the first across leaping from the ship onto the dock letting out a whoop of joy as he felt the solid wood frame underneath him.  He turned his attention from the dock up to the small town that lay a few hundred yards away.  Ramshackle buildings beat down by wind, rain, and saltwater stared back at him.  Not your typical tourist attraction he decided and laughed to himself.  He wasn't interested in what most "normal" people would visit.  He was interested though in what a few of the old timers might tell him about the area.  He'd have to spend a little while around the town and see if he could find out anything.  Without a backward glance at the ship Lineak began walking towards the town and with it he could feel anticipation mounting.  Getting back to nature felt amazing.

As Lineak neared the town he could feel an invisible weight drop on his shoulders strong, dark, manevelont, evil.  He couldn't put his finger on his misgivings and in the end he shoved them to the side.  The small town had a single street lined with store fronts that made Lineak grin.  Paps's General Store sat right next to Annie's Baked Goods, across from them both sat Untamed Wilds Saloon and Casino.  A barber shop and a mechanic's garage rounded out the entire list of stores in town.  Well, he'd wanted remote.  He decided he'd try the bakery first and see if there was anybody that could tell him anything there.

There wasn't even an attempt at fighting the effects of saltwater on the paint he could tell.  If the building had ever had paint to begin with.  He pushed open the rotting door and looked aruond.  An old lady sat behind the single counter with crochet hooks in hand.  She stared at him as she furiously crocheted something.  "Well? What is it your after?"  To be quite honest Lineak wasn't sure he was after anything more than information.  "I'd like to know about the area if I could trouble you for some of your time."  The woman's response was swift and certain.  "If you're not buying you're leaving.  Good day."  The werewolf tried to think of something to say before turning his back and exiting.  So much for Annie's.

The saloon might be the place to try next he decided.  The outside was just in need of repair as Annie's had been.  However, as soon as he walked inside he was greeted by fresh paint, the smell of fresh game and booze, and the sound of dice.  A small crowd of people gathered around a bar while others hunched over various gaming apparatus.  Lineak mentally tallied the numbers gathered and tried to picture this tiny town with twenty residents all in the saloon together.  Adding to the strangeness it appeared as if everyone in the saloon was in their mid to late twenties.

Alarm bells began going off inside the werewolf's mind but he was unsure what exactly they meant.  sure something was going on the town, but what and or why? He really didn't want to know.  He was in the area for one purpose to get out into the woods and that was that.  He approached the bar and nodded to the barkeep.

"Hey I'm new here just passing through.  What can you tell me about this place?"

"Only that you're going to want to leave and do it now.  It's not safe for anyone here.  Go on get."

The warm reception from the two people cemented Lineak's resolve.  He wasn't going to stick around for any longer.  There were woods out there calling his name and he was going to go back to the basics.  Do what he had been born doing.  It was time for some hunting and trapping in the wild.  He couldn't wait to escape this last little bastion of civilization.

From the saloon it was a short walk to the edge of town.  Lineak turned back to look at the weather beaten town for just a moment before letting the call of the wild wash over him.  The woods began half a mile to the north and he headed that way immedietly a plan of action going through his mind as he outlined what he'd like to do in the upcoming days.  He wanted to get far enough away that he wouldn't be infringing on any of the trap lines of the locals and that meant going miles through the forest.  He'd have to set up some kind of a shelter as well.  Time consuming for sure but it needed to be done.  Then there was the time required to actually explore the area and set up trap lines.  All in all it was going to take quite some time.

As Lineak entered the woods a few things leapts out at him as odd.  The entire forest was quiet, dead quiet.  Additionally there was a distinct lack of creatures, scat, and then the strangest.  It was the trees they were identical.  The werewolf spent a few minutes going from tree to tree to test the theory before rocking back and forth on his heels.  They truly were identical.  Every last bit of bark on the trees identical, the leaves identical, very very odd.  He tried utilizing his sense of smell only to smell nothing.  Thoroughly confused with the situation he attempted to wrap his mind around it.
